I attempted to create an artistic view of Arrakis (aka Dune)

for this, I followed the amazing tutorial from :icondemosthenesvoice: - The Grand Planet Tutorial (see there : [link] ) - using as raw material GoogleMap screenshots.

for sure it can be improved, and I still need to review the technical part : like on the planet's edge, texture is too pixellized and the atmosphere should also be smoothed a bit.

I had some issues with the star field in background and need to find a better approach. Next time, I'll also try to add a sand storm - would be terrific !

If any of you have a tip for improving this work, please let me know about

PS 1 : v1.01 - download for full view
PS 2 : v1.02 - starspace "upgraded"
PS 3 : v1.03 - starspace "upgraded" - scalable 1680x1050px

Hm... I actually really like the starfield. Also, the pixellation at the edges of the planet isn't really noticeable at this resolution, so I'd say it's ok.
Nice work!

Thx !!
the pixelization on the edge is obvious in the .psd file, I had to trick in a no really orthodox way to smoother it.
I shall practice more :)

Well I think what counts more is the final result, which looks smooth here. I always try to create my planets at a size large enough that the pixellation isn't noticeable in the final result.

my .psd file is up to 850 MB and the file format is 5400x5400 px
above might very very challenging for the CPU ... :P

So that's fine for just about anything, I wouldn't worry about it ;)

Beautiful planet, i0nah! The detail is awesome.

I think you need some more detail on your starscape, though. I can barely even see the stars.

:thanks: for your comment.

indeed, the star-scape need some more shining... I'm looking after a proper tutorial and proper technique.

I used this one for my space stuff:

But I make an inverted black gradient bar in PS to dull out the stars on the top and bottom, and add some "clouds" to give a sort of "milky way" effect. I also found it helps to select some of the brighter stars, copy-and-paste them to a new layer, and scale up the size to add some size variance to the starscape.
